What is Counselors for Social Justice?

The mission of Counselors for Social Justice is to work to promote social justice in our society through confronting oppressive systems of power and privilege that affect professional counselors and our clients and to assist in the positive change in our society through the professional development of counselors.

What is social justice in counseling?

Social justice counseling represents a multifaceted approach to counseling in which practitioners strive to simultaneously promote human development and the common good through addressing challenges related to both individual and distributive justice. Social justice counseling includes empowerment of the individual as well as active confrontation of injustice and inequality in society as they impact clientele as well as those in their systemic contexts. In doing so, social justice counselors direct attention to the promotion of four critical principles that guide their work; equity, access, participation, and harmony. This work is done with a focus on the cultural, contextual, and individual needs of those served.

Why should I join CSJ?

The overwhelming majority of people who join Counselors for Social Justice are already committed to issues of social justice in the world as well as the impact of social injustice in their clientele. CSJ serves as an association of professionals focused on improving the impact of counseling on the lives of others as well as the world around them. By joining CSJ, professionals find new allies in their work and passions, which serves to keep them focused on promoting human development and the common good.

CSJ Co-sponsors a National Project
Continuing the National Discussion on Race, Justice and Peace

Submitted by Michael D’Andrea

In the Fall of 2007, the CSJ leadership agreed to co-sponsor a national project with the National Institute for Multicultural Competence (NIMC) called “Continuing the National Discussion on Justice, Race, and Justice.” This national intervention in based on the recommendations generated by the 2001 United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance that was convened in South Africa. The 2001 World Conference recommended that counselors, psychologists and other mental health professionals around the world would do well to convene meetings in local communities to continue discussions about these important issues.

The first town hall meeting that was co-sponsored by CSJ was held at the Annual Winter Roundtable at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York on February 16, 2008. Several additional town hall meetings were held in other locations since that time. This includes town hall meetings convened in Honolulu (March 2008); Boston College (August 2008), the University of Wisconsin; OsKosh (October 2008), Ellensburg, Washington (at Central Washington University in November 2008), New Orleans (January 2009), New York City (2009), and Gainesville, Florida (at the University of Florida in September 2009). Future town hall meetings are being planned for San Diego (October 2009) and Dallas, Texas (November 2010). If you are interested in getting more information about this project and ways to bring the town hall meeting project to your university or community, contact Michaeel D'Andrea
